HOW IT WORKS

How does the Lucky Iron Fish/Leaf Work?

01. Drop it in

Place the Lucky Iron Fish into 1 litre of boiling liquid - soups, broths, porridge, or rice dishes work well, as the iron absorbs into the meal as it cooks. If using plain water, add a squeeze of lemon juice or 2-3 drops of citrus to support iron absorption.

02. Boil for 10 minutes to release iron

Leave the fish in the boiling liquid for 10 minutes, then remove carefully before serving.

03. Rinse, dry, and store your iron fish

Wash with cool water and scrub with soap. Dry thoroughly before storing - no moisture left behind.

WHO IT'S FOR

The Lucky Iron Fish (or Leaf) may be worth exploring if you:

Are managing fatigue, brain fog, or low energy and have been found to have low ferritin or iron stores

Find oral iron supplements hard on your digestive system

Are vegetarian or vegan and rely on plant-based iron sources

Are pregnant or breastfeeding and looking to support your dietary iron intake - noting that individual iron needs vary significantly during pregnancy, so a conversation with your midwife or GP is a sensible first step

Cook regularly and want an easy way to add more iron to meals for your whole household

A note on what it is not suited for: the Lucky Iron Fish addresses iron released during cooking. It is not suited to anaemia caused by conditions such as haemolytic disorders or thalassemia, or as a substitute for clinical management of severe iron deficiency anaemia. If you are not sure whether iron levels may be contributing to your symptoms, a conversation with your GP or one of our practitioners is a good starting point.

The Science behind the Lucky Iron Fish

Made from food-grade iron & independently tested for safety

The Lucky Iron Fish is made from food-grade electrolytic iron powder - the same material used in food fortification programs worldwide. This form of iron is classified as GRAS (Generally Recognised as Safe) for food use by the US FDA, and is widely used in fortified foods and global nutrition programs. Each batch is independently tested by Lucky Iron Life for iron release levels and heavy metal safety.¹

What the clinical research found

A review published in Blood Advances (American Society of Hematology, 2017) found that daily use of the Lucky Iron Fish was associated with approximately a 43% reduction in anaemia prevalence in studied populations.²

This research was conducted in populations with low baseline dietary iron intake, and findings reflect population-level outcomes rather than individual results.

A separate peer-reviewed safety study confirmed that iron released per use falls within established safe limits for daily dietary use.¹

Iron stores and chronic illness - what the research suggests

Iron stores - particularly ferritin levels - are one factor that practitioners sometimes assess when working with people managing persistent fatigue.

Some published research has explored associations between iron deficiency and conditions including fibromyalgia³ and POTS,⁴ though this is an evolving area and individual circumstances vary considerably.

This does not mean the Lucky Iron Fish treats these conditions - but it does mean that supporting dietary iron intake may be worth discussing with your practitioner if these are part of your picture.

Recipes & usage ideas

The Lucky Iron Fish works in any liquid-based meal. Soups, stews, curries, and broths are the most straightforward - drop the fish in while the dish cooks. It also works well in porridge, rice dishes, and smoothies where a squeeze of citrus is already part of the recipe.

my lucky iron fish/leaf looks different/has spots on it, is it still safe to cook with?

It's completely normal for your Fish/Leaf to change appearance over time since it's made from natural iron.

If you notice an orange color, it’s probably rust. Don’t worry - rust is common and can be easily cleaned off.

To prevent rust, follow the use & care steps:

Make sure to scrub your Fish with soapy water both before and after use, even when just using it in boiling water.

After cleaning, be sure to dry your Lucky Iron Fish/Leaf right away using a kitchen towel.

After drying, apply one or two drops of Protection Oil to shield it from moisture in the environment.

Next, clean it again by scrubbing with soap and water. Make sure to dry it completely before applying the Protection Oil.

That's it!

does the lucky iron fish/leaf release enough iron for me?

Most adults require between 8 and 18mg of iron daily, based on their lifestyle and life stage. When used correctly, the Lucky Iron Fish and Leaf supply 6-8mg of easily absorbed iron per use, covering a significant portion of the daily iron needs for most people.

Your needs may be more or less than the average so it is always advisable to speak with your healthcare professionals if you are unsure how much iron you need.

can the lucky iron fish/leaf cause iron toxicity or release too much iron?

Use according to the instructions and speak with your healthcare professionals if you have any concerns.

can the lucky iron fish/leaf be used for meals that will be eaten by the whole family?

is there any research done on the use of the lucky iron life products?

There is! If you would like to read more on the published research behind Lucky Iron Life's products, please checkout the research page on their website.

how does the lucky iron fish release iron into my food?

The fish is made from food-grade electrolytic iron powder. When boiled in liquid, microscopic iron particles are released from the surface through a natural electrochemical process. Adding a small amount of acidic liquid - like a squeeze of lemon - can help support the absorption of that iron. This is the same principle behind why vitamin C is often paired with plant-based iron sources.

does it affect the taste of food?

Most people report no noticeable change in taste. A faint metallic taste is occasionally noted when the fish is boiled in plain water, but is rarely reported when used in soups, stews, or rice dishes. Adding the citrus step tends to reduce any metallic notes.

is it safe to use every day?

Yes, when used as directed. Each batch is independently tested by Lucky Iron Life to confirm iron release falls within established safe limits for daily dietary use. The fish is made from food-grade electrolytic iron powder, classified as GRAS for food use by the US FDA and widely used in food fortification programs worldwide.

what is the difference between the fish and the leaf?

Both are functionally identical. They release the same amount of iron per use, are made from the same materials, and last the same amount of time. The only difference is shape - the Leaf was introduced for people who preferred a different aesthetic. Both are available at the same price.
